Custom LiPo Battery Packs: Things OEM Customers Usually Care About

For many OEM devices, the battery is not only a power source.

It also affects the product size, working time, charging performance, and sometimes even the final product structure.

In recent years, we have seen more customers choosing custom lithium polymer battery packs instead of standard battery models. This is especially common in portable electronic devices, smart wearables, beauty equipment, GPS trackers, medical products, and some pet devices.

During communication with different projects, there are several questions customers usually care about before starting battery customization.

Battery Size and Available Space

In many projects, the device structure is already fixed before the battery is confirmed.

Because of this, battery size often becomes the first thing customers focus on.

For LiPo batteries, even a small thickness difference may affect assembly.

Some customers only provide the battery compartment size, while others send drawings or 3D files for evaluation.

Besides the cell size itself, there are also other details that may affect the final dimensions:

PCM thickness

Wire position

Connector type

Foam tape

Insulation materials

Heat shrink wrapping

Sometimes the battery can fit theoretically, but after adding PCM and cables, the actual assembly becomes difficult. This is one reason why battery drawings are usually confirmed several times during OEM projects.

Capacity and Runtime

Another common concern is battery runtime.

Many customers hope to increase capacity as much as possible, but in actual projects, battery size and device space usually limit the available capacity.

For example, in slim portable devices, customers may want both long runtime and very thin thickness. In these situations, balancing capacity and dimensions becomes important.

We also notice that some devices do not require extremely high capacity, but they need stable performance and consistent production quality over time.

For OEM projects, stable supply is sometimes more important than pushing capacity to the highest level.

PCM and Protection Design

PCM is another topic frequently discussed during battery customization.

Different applications may require different protection functions, such as:

Overcharge protection

Over-discharge protection

Overcurrent protection

Temperature monitoring

Some customers also require NTC thermistors for communication with the device system.

In some projects, especially medical or industrial devices, the protection design requirements can be more detailed than consumer electronics.

Because of this, battery suppliers usually confirm the working current, charging method, and device requirements before finalizing the PCM solution.

Connector and Cable Details

Connector details are often underestimated at the beginning of a project.

In reality, many battery samples need revision simply because the connector direction, cable length, or pin definition does not match the device.

Even when using the same battery cell, different connectors may affect the assembly process.

For OEM customers, providing clear connector photos or specifications can help reduce communication time and sample modification later.

Certification Requirements

Certification is also an important part of custom LiPo battery projects.

Different markets may require different certifications, including:

UN38.3

CB

CE

KC

BIS

Some customers assume that if a battery cell already has certification, every battery pack arrangement automatically uses the same certification situation. However, in actual projects, changes in configuration, PCM, or pack structure may affect certification evaluation.

This is especially important for products entering Korea or India markets, where certification requirements are usually stricter.

Because of this, many OEM customers now confirm certification requirements at an early project stage instead of waiting until mass production.

Discharge Rate and Application Matching

Some devices require higher discharge current than standard consumer electronics.

However, not every LiPo battery is suitable for high-rate discharge applications.

For example, devices like drones, RC products, or some power tools may require much higher discharge performance than ordinary portable electronics.

In many OEM projects, understanding the actual working current helps avoid selecting an unsuitable battery solution.

Sometimes customers only focus on capacity, while the discharge requirement is equally important for battery performance and cycle life.

Sample Testing Before Mass Production

For most custom battery projects, samples are usually necessary before volume production.

During testing, customers may evaluate:

Battery fitting

Runtime

Charging performance

Connector compatibility

Device communication

Temperature performance

In some cases, small adjustments are still needed after the first sample stage. This is relatively common in OEM battery projects and helps reduce later production risks.

Final Thoughts

Custom LiPo battery packs are widely used in many modern electronic devices, but every project has different requirements.

Besides battery capacity, factors like dimensions, PCM design, connector selection, certification, and discharge performance also affect the final battery solution.

In many OEM projects, early communication about these details can help reduce sample revisions and improve project efficiency later.
