Lithium Battery Lifespan and Maintenance: How to Extend Battery Life and Properly Maintain It

1.Key Factors Affecting Lithium Battery Lifespan

(1)Depth of Discharge (DOD)

Avoid full charge/discharge cycles. Keep battery levels between ‌20%-80%‌ to minimize stress on electrode materials. Data shows shallow

cycles (partial charging/discharging) can achieve ‌2,000 cycles‌ , while full cycles reduce lifespan to ‌500 cycles‌‌.

For long-term storage, maintain ‌50% charge‌ and perform a full charge-discharge cycle monthly to calibrate the battery management system

(BMS)‌.

(2)Temperature Conditions

High temperatures (>50°C) accelerate electrolyte evaporation and electrode degradation. Low temperatures (<-20°C) reduce ion conductivity.

Ideal operating range: ‌20-25°C‌; avoid charging in direct sunlight or hot environments‌.

Allow batteries to cool for ‌20 minutes‌ after heavy use (e.g., electric vehicles) before charging to prevent excessive internal reactions‌.

(3)Charge/Discharge Rates

Fast charging (high current) increases internal stress and capacity loss. Use ‌gentle charging/discharging‌ modes (e.g., gradual acceleration in

EVs to avoid sudden current spikes)‌.

2.Daily Maintenance and Care

(1)Charging Habits

Use ‌original or certified chargers‌ to avoid voltage/current mismatches that damage cells‌.

Set charge limits to ‌85%-90%‌ to prevent overcharging; recharge when battery drops to ‌20%‌‌.

(2)Physical Protection

Avoid impacts or compression to prevent internal short circuits. Ensure waterproofing in rainy conditions to avoid moisture-induced corrosion‌.

(3)Long-Term Storage

For unused devices, perform partial charging/discharging every ‌1-2 months‌ to maintain cell activity and prevent deep discharge damage‌.

3.Notes for Different Battery Types

(1)NMC Batteries (Nickel Manganese Cobalt)

Poor thermal stability (risk of decomposition at 250-300°C). Avoid high-temperature charging and set charge limits to ‌85%-90%‌; never store

fully charged‌.

(2)LFP Batteries (Lithium Iron Phosphate)

Sensitive to deep discharges. Shallow cycles (‌20%-80%‌) can extend lifespan to ‌2,000+ cycles‌. Better low-temperature performance than

NMC but avoid high-current charging below ‌-20°C‌‌.

4.Common Myths Debunked

"Must drain before charging"‌: Lithium batteries have no "memory effect"; partial charging is bettery for longevity‌.

"Full charge storage is safer"‌: Long-term full-charge storage accelerates electrolyte breakdown. Store at ‌50% charge‌‌.

By following these guidelines, you can maximize lithium battery lifespan and reduce capacity degradation.
